This is the third such protest in Florida over textbooks that were found to be on the Florida Department of Education approved list.

Similar protests have occurred in neighboring Brevard County while the earlier one was in Sarasota County in 2010; see this WatchDog Wire post, “Sarasota, Florida’s Biased Textbook on Islam Problem”.

A meeting at the Volusia school board was cancelled despite more than 45 parents showing up.  Florida State CAR director Hasan Shipley showed up to suggest that this was a national trend of hate groups hating Muslims and such intolerance was out of order. The US Department of Justice even weighed alleged safety issues. The Volusia protest was sparked by a Facebook post by a parent objecting to chapter devoted to Islam while other faiths did not receive equal treatment.

Here is the WFTV report, “Volusia Parents Protest Chapter on Islam”

A school board meeting was postponed Tuesday after upset Volusia County parents said a world history textbook in schools statewide teaches children more about Islam than other religions.

Parents in County said the book has an entire chapter on Islam but doesn’t give the same attention to other religions.

They protested outside school district headquarters, calling for equal education.

Demonstrators on both sides had a heated discussion.

“The people behind this movement are reflecting a national trend of hate groups that are promoting hatred of their Muslim neighbors. I think that’s un-American and it’s frankly just promoting intolerance, and right now what I think our community needs is to learn from each other,” said Hassan Shibly, CAIR Florida executive director.

The Volusia County School Board said it postponed its Tuesday meeting “in the interest of public safety.”

The district said it was contacted by the U.S. Department of Justice before the meeting was supposed to start and said “the nature of this information raised substantial safety concerns.”

The district said with the information it received, it decided to put more security measures in place to make sure everyone at the meeting would be safe.

The district said it doesn’t comment on procedures but did say there was no specific threat of violence.
