Tyke’s Tragic Death Not Forgotten

Twenty years ago, Tyke was shot nearly 100 times and killed in the streets of Honolulu after she went on a rampage, killing her trainer and injuring 13 others prior to a circus performance. Many elephants used in circuses are subjected to routine cruelty, and Tyke was no different. She had been abused for years, and the never-ending confinement was too much for her to bear.

Just in time for the anniversary of Tyke’s death, and thanks in large part to caring people like YOU, Moscow International Circus officials have pledged not to use any animals in their show’s upcoming performances. More than 68,000 PETA and peta2 supporters wrote to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, where the circus is scheduled to perform in October, and asked the venue not to allow Moscow International Circus to exploit wild animals under its roof. Circus officials originally stated that they would be leaving elephant acts out of the show, but that other animals, such as big cats, would be included. Now, presumably because of the huge response from concerned people, the circus has committed to leaving ALL animals out of its show!

Twenty years later, Tyke’s death is a reminder of the horrors that animals in circuses still face every day. Never go to any circus that uses animals, and urge your friends and family to do the same.
