Nepal Police Rescue 101-Year-Old Man One Week after Devastating Quake
Dramatic Video Building Collapse During Earthquake in Nepal
Dramatic video emerged on Wednesday showing the moment the earthquake struck in Kathmandu last Saturday. The images taken from a closed circuit surveillance camera show the scene in the Sundhara district of the capital.
After a week spent buried under the rubble, a 101-year-old man was rescued in Nepal Saturday.
CNN reports that Nepali police retrieved the centenarian, named Funchu Tamang, from the wreckage of his home northwest of Kathmandu.
Police say they don’t know how Tamang could have survived, but somehow he’s escaped with only minor injuries.
Three people were pulled from the rubble near Syauli Village Sunday, according to the Associated Press.
Others, however, have not been so lucky.
The full scope of the disaster in Nepal is beginning to come into focus, and it is tragic. Over 7,000 people have died, thousands more are injured and many survivors are homeless, lacking food, water and other basic necessities.
What is clear is that help is needed — and fast.
“We know the damage is extensive and that access into rural areas will be very, very difficult for everybody,” said Ben Pickering, Save the Children’s humanitarian adviser in Britain.
Doctors Without Borders is sending teams and 3,000 kits including medical supplies.
AmeriCares has also sent a team from India and is preparing shipments of medical aid and relief supplies. “We are prepared to help any way that we can,” said AmeriCares President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis. “This is a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families suffering.”
Handicap International, which was already established in Nepal with 47 workers, is also offering assistance.
Here is a list of charities that are turning to you for support as they send teams in to help victims:
