27-year-old Younis Medni Azaam from Taibe, an Arab village in the north of Israel, joined the Islamic State around five months ago. Tonight, his family received a message from the terror organization stating that Azaam was killed during fighting which took place in the city of Tadmur.
According to the reports received by the family, Azaam was badly injured during a shootout and later died of his injuries. He left behind a wife and two kids, including a daughter who was born only 10 days ago. The family set up a mourning tent in their home. Azaam is the fourth Israeli to die amongst the ranks of the Islamic terror organization.
The family reported that five months ago, Azaam left to Turkey and later infiltrated Syria. Several days ago, he called his friend from Taibe and told him: “We are in a very bad war. I hope we will get through it safely.”
Yesterday, national television in Syria reported that Islamic State fighters took over the old city of Tadmur. The civilians living in the area were evacuated from the city during the last day, as were some of the historic artifacts in the area.
This is the first time since the beginning of the civil war in Syria that the Syrian regime has lost control over the historic city. Tadmur is built on remains aging back two thousand years, including old temples and an ancient theatre. Head of the Syrian Antiques Authority called on the international community to help prevent incidents similar to those that took place in Iraq, where Islamic State fighters destroyed ancient statues and temples, from recurring.
