UN envoy: Put Israel on blacklist for harming children
Envoy for Children and Armed Conflict seeks Israel army to be categorized along IS, Boko Haram over Gaza war
A top United Nations official tasked with monitoring the way children are affected by armed conflict has this week recommended placing Israeli military on a shortlist of terror groups that also includes the Islamic State and Boko Haram, the Ynetnews website reported Thursday.
The latest report by Leila Zerrougui, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, includes an appendix containing a list of organizations regularly and systematically compromising the welfare of children.
The appendix also recommends blacklisting various branches of affiliates of al-Qaida and the Taliban, as well as countries such as the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo.
The report is set for publication later this week.
It is understood Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will be reluctant to follow the recommendation, as this would risk “alienating” Israel and causing a serious rupture in the ties between UN and the country.
The report quoted Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a vocal supporter of Israel, as warning against the recommendation.
“There’s a report that may come out any day now where the United Nations is considering the State of Israel in the same category as Boko Haram when it comes to crimes against children.
