First penis transplant recipient set to become a dad
The 21-year-old South African, whose identity is being protected, lost all but one centimetre of his penis during a botched circumcision when he was 18, the BBC reports.
He received the donated penis in December after a nine-hour operation, which was the first in the world to be successful.
The procedure was not publicly reported until March as doctors wanted to see how the patient recovered.
Dr Andre van der Merwe, a surgeon who led the operation at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, said he was “very pleased” to report the man’s girlfriend is four months pregnant.
“This is what we intended, that he should be able to stand up and be able to urinate and have intercourse, so it is a milestone for him,” Dr Van der Merwe said.
The man will remain under observation in case more surgical corrections are needed.
Dr van der Merwe said he had been inundated with requests for penis transplants from around the world and even offers from potential donors.
“I’ve had someone email from America who wants his penis removed, ” he said.
“He wants to be genderless and donate his penis to somebody. ”
