Will the New York Times Show This Painting of Mohammed Made Out of Condoms?
If a Pope painting made out of condoms is fine, why not Mohammed?
The Milwaukee Art Museum acquired a “painting” of the previous pope made out of Condoms donated by a gay rights activist. The same media outlets that refused to run the Mohammed cartoons to avoid offending religious sensibilities are gleefully running photos of a picture of the Pope made out of condoms and defending it.
This was New York Times editor Dean Baquet’s position on the Mohammed cartoons.
New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet decided that his paper would not publish Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad primarily because he did not want to insult the paper’s Muslim readers.
“Ultimately, he decided against it, he said, because he had to consider foremost the sensibilities of Times readers, especially its Muslim readers,” Times public editor Margaret Sullivan reported Thursday. “To many of them, he said, depictions of the prophet Muhammad are sacrilegious; those that are meant to mock even more so. ‘We have a standard that is long held and that serves us well: that there is a line between gratuitous insult and satire. Most of these are gratuitous insult.'”
“Let’s not forget the Muslim family in Brooklyn who read us and is offended by any depiction of what he sees as his prophet. I don’t give a damn about the head of ISIS but I do care about that family and it is arrogant to ignore them.”
But Dean isn’t interested in the Catholic family in Brooklyn or its sensibilities. The New York Times ran a photo of the Pope condom. So did Time Magazine. So did the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sun Times, New York Observer, the New York Daily News and countless other media outlets.
So how many of them would be willing to run this portrait of Mohammed made out of condoms? It’s the same portrait, but offending Catholics is one thing, offending Muslims is another.
