Sex offender freed from secure unit brutally raped mum at knifepoint weeks later
A sex attacker who raped a terrified young mum at knifepoint was released from a secure mental unit just three months earlier, it has been revealed.
He went on to rape and sexually assaulted his victim, a 29-year-old mum-of-one, on November 13, 2014.
Ali, 24, was jailed for five years yesterday and ordered to be supervised for three years after his release.
But campaigners were astonished that he was freed to rape the victim in the first place.
David Hines of the National Victims Association said: “I’m fed up with hearing these stories from mental health and psychiatric institutions. How many times do they get it wrong?
“Anyone who makes a mistake on this level should be sacked. If psychiatrists were responsible for the impact of their decisions, I don’t think they would be so keen to let them out.”
Ali accosted his victim in the Leith Links area of the capital in the early hours of November 13.
Mention of a knife was deleted from the charge. But the victim, a sex worker, told Ali’s trial how he held a blade to her ribs and demanded money.
She told him she had no cash. He then forced her to perform a sex act.
