Michelle Obama Tweets #MuslimLivesMatter to Students at Michigan Islamic Academy
Martha’s Vineyard, MA – First Lady Michelle Obama is promoting a new ad campaign called Let Girls Learn, with the goal of making sure young women around the world have the chance to go to college.
On Saturday afternoon, she took part in an online chat with the Michigan Islamic Academy in Ann Arbor, MI, (one of four Islamic schools in Michigan), through The White House’s Social Hub while vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard.
The first lady told the young women of the academy, “Maybe you read the news or see online what folks are saying about you and your religion and you wonder if anyone will ever see you beyond your hijab, to see you for who you really are, without being blindsided by the fears in their own minds. I can understand how frustrating and painful that can be.”
In what some are saying was an inappropriate comparison during a question and answer segment, Mrs. Obama compared a recent terrorist threat against a mosque in Paterson, NJ, to the shootings of unarmed black men across the country by law enforcement. “Unfortunately, a few bad police officers have made entire departments look bad, and that is not the truth at all, but it led to a movement called Black Lives Matter,” Mrs. Obama continued, “so you can take this pain and injustice you feel and turn it into something positive.”
