RED ALERT: Obama Defense Secretary Reveals American Towns Targeted for Gitmo Detainees
Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has reportedly been planning to move the detainees to Leavenworth, Kansas, and/or Charleston, South Carolina.
“DOD assessment teams are evaluating alternative detention sites and examining the investments required to make these sites suitable for holding this second group of detainees,” Carter said during a press conference.
“Assessment teams have gone to Leavenworth and will soon go to Charleston to analyze requirements,” Carter continued. “This does not mean that either of these sites will be chosen. We will also be assessing other locations.”
Republican Sens. Pat Roberts and Lindsey Graham — from Kansas and South Carolina, respectively — have said that they would fight the transfer of prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to the United States mainland, noting that the law specifically prevents the president from doing so.
“We have received reports of President Obama’s attempt to shut down Guantanamo Bay, which once again reflects another egregious overstep by this administration,” Sen. Roberts said in a statement.
“Congress has consistently stopped Obama by law from moving a single detainee to the U.S.,” Roberts continued. “I shut down this administration’s nominee for secretary of the Army in 2009 to prevent moving any detainees to Kansas and will do it again if necessary … Not on my watch will any terrorist be placed in Kansas.”
