Egypt flooded Palestinian tunnels with seawater
Last October, Egypt decided to fight against the Palestinian smuggling tunnels and began to flood them with seawater. In this manner, Egypt destroyed almost 2,000 tunnels. Now there are only 20 active tunnels left. “What Israel failed to destroy in Operation Protective Edge the Egyptians destroyed in 20 days,” Palestinians complained.
Gaza’s residents clearly remember the night in late October when Egypt flooded their smuggling tunnels with seawater. More than 2,000 tunnels operated under the Egyptian border and Rafah. “We woke up at night and soon some of us were looking for a mop and others tried to block the sewer to prevent water from coming in,” recalls Samia Abu Rami, a Palestinian resident of Rafah.
