Is a Russian nuclear strike on Turkey Putin’s next step?

Wednesday, 25 November 2015 | At least one respected military analyst in Russia is suggesting that Moscow may have to engage in a nuclear war with the 28-nation NATO alliance. A counterpart in the West calls the language “nuclear brinkmanship.”

In the aftermath of Turkey’s take-down of a Russia fighter jet yesterday, it was widely headlined that President Putin called the act a “stab in the back.” What the headline does not include is how Putin characterized Turkey when he made the remark. It was, he said, “a stab in the back delivered by terrorists’ accomplices” [italics added]. Putin’s “terrorist” reference is to Islamic State, a.k.a. ISIS, against which Russia has declared war.

Sir Michael Graydon, former head of the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force, yesterday characterized the situation as “a monstrous diplomatic problem.”

At least one respected military analyst in Russia agrees. Pavel Felgenhauer is well known for the numerous articles he has written about Russia’s foreign policies. “There may be fighting at sea between the Turkish fleet and Russian [fleet].

“Perhaps too the Turks will close Bosphorus.” Bosphorus is an internationally strategic naval strait that connects Europe and Asia.

A critical likelihood, Felgenhauer added, is “the intervention of other NATO countries in the conflict.”

“In this kind of conflict,” he said, “Russia has little chance without the use of nuclear weapons.”

It appears that Russia is preparing for that possibility. According to Russian news agency, RT, Moscow has given new orders to its missile cruiser, Makva, recently
