A New York man was arrested Thursday for plotting to carry out a brutal attack in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
A 25-year-old convicted felon and Muslim convert named Emanuel Lutchman intended to attack patrons at bars and restaurants with a machete, and possibly a bomb, on behalf of the Islamic State group.
He has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a known terrorist organization, and court documents revealed that he had sworn allegiance to Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and was in contact with Islamic State members in Syria, according to The Hill.
Lutchman’s Syrian contact is alleged to have told him: “New Years is here soon. Do operations and kill some kuffar.”
Thankfully, paid informants provided the FBI with recorded conversations and screen shots of electronic communications that exposed his violent plot to murder innocent Americans.
“The FBI thwarted Emanuel Lutchman’s intent to kill civilians on New Year’s Eve,” declared Special Agent in Charge Adam Cohen. “The FBI remains concerned about people overseas who use the Internet to inspire people in the United States to commit acts of violence where they live.”
As if that weren’t enough, a quick review of Lutchman’s social media accounts by the Independent Journalrevealed that he was an overt supporter of the Islamic State group and a follower of the infamous and now-deceased Al Qaeda recruiter Anwar al-Awlaki.
