Nobody Knew These Horrifying Color Photographs of the Lodz Ghetto Existed


Taken by Hitler’s chief accountant, they were discovered in a bookshop in Vienna in 1987

These horrifying color photographs of the Łódź Ghetto were unearthed in a second-hand bookshop in Vienna in 1987. Upon closer inspection, they turned out to be the personal archive of Walter Genewein, the Nazis’ chief accountant. The images were sold to the bookstore after his death. Why did Genewein take the images? The Łódź Ghetto was the second-largest ghetto in all of German-occupied Europe after the Warsaw Ghetto. Established after the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, it served as a transit town for the death camps and a major industrial centre for the German war machine.
