KIM JONG FAT A**: Thousands starve in impoverished North Korea, but their secretive leader certainly doesn’t look like he’s gone hungry recently

The pictures are a noticeable difference to his relatively lean early years in power following the death of his father Kim Jong-Il.


But a diet that includes some of the finest delicacies in global cuisine – and a habit of drinking two bottles of Cristal at a time – are likely to have contributed to his ballooning weight.

His decadent lifestyle is common knowledge among the country’s elite and is an unashamed hypocrisy given the impoverished conditions much of the population is subjected to.

North Korea was struck by a particularly brutal famine in the 1990s, during which hundreds of thousands died from starvation.

Although it is not clear if the scale of this famine has been matched since, last year experts warned the country was facing serious food production shortages.

U.N. representatives who visited the country’s breadbasket in North Hwanghae and South Hwanghae provinces in June last year found potato, wheat and barley harvests were at risk of being cut by up to 50 percent due to drought.

Wells were dry and reservoir levels were also extremely low following below-normal rainfall and snowfall in 2014 and early 2015.

Liliana Balbi, an official within the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), said: ‘We don’t have enough information to say if people are starving or not. But the situation is serious. They are on the borderline.’
