Revealed – Bloodied Belgian airport bomb victim pictured on floor is top basketball player now undergoing surgery to save leg
Pictured laying in a pool of blood, his jeans torn and stained red, basketball player Sebastien Bellin is one of the dozens who were injured when two bombs rocked Brussels Airport this morning.
Brazilian-born Bellin, 37, was thrown 20 metres into the air by a blast and has since undergone surgery for his injuries.
The series of blasts across the city killed 34 people and injured 170 this morning, and witnesses described apocalyptic scenes with blood and ‘dismembered bodies everywhere’ in the terminal building.
Bellin used to play for Oakland University in California before moving to Europe.
In a tweet, OU head men’s basketball coach Greg Kampe said Bellin had been hurt in a bombing and was going into a second surgery. He asked for prayers.
BC Telenet Oostende, a professional Belgian basketball team, has been keeping fans up-to-date with his condition.
The club tweeted: ‘We wish our former player Sebastien Bellin much strength and a speedy recovery! #PrayForBelgium.’
It later added: ‘UPDATE: Sebastian Bellin has his first surgery. There are now still shards in his leg and hip. He was thrown out 20m.’
FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Europe Cup tweeted: ‘We wish former @BCOOSTENDE and Belgium national team player Sebastien Bellin a speedy recovery.’
During his career, Bellin was a member of the Belgian national team and now played for the Belgian club, Gent Hawks.
