STRIKE BACK: Military chiefs WIPE OUT Islamist terrorists with airstrike on training camp
US officials targeted the camp – used by terror group Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) – in the mountains of Yemen yesterday.
AQAP, al-Qaeda’s most active branch, were behind last year’s attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo in which 12 people were killed.
The Islamist group was founded in 2009 by the merger of the Yemeni and Saudi wings of the notorious network founded by Osama bin Laden.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook claimed the strike hampers AQAP’s “ability to use Yemen as a base for attacks that threaten US persons”.
He said: “It demonstrates our commitment to defeating al-Qaeda and denying it safe haven.”
Dozens of fighters have been “removed from the battlefield” as a result of the attack, he added.
