Historic city of Palmyra ‘completely’ retaken from ISIS after Putin bombing blitz

THE historic city of Palmyra has completely been recaptured from the clutches of Islamic State (ISIS) after a bombing blitz from Vladimir Putin’s jets.


The huge blow to the sick jihadis come after the Islamic extremists took control of the desert city last May – and have held it ever since.

A military source said the Syrian army and its militia allies have now taken “complete control over the city of Palmyra”.

It comes after a three-week ground offensive backed by relentless air strikes from Russian jets, aimed at driving ISIS back.

The massive military operation killed more than 400 militants while the remaining jihadists fled to Raqqa – one of the few ISIS strongholds left in Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights called the attack  “the biggest single defeat for the group since it declared a caliphate”.

Palmyra was home to some of the most extensive ruins of the Roman empire – a Unesco world heritage site often known as the “Pearl of the Desert”.

Islamic State militants dynamited several monuments last year, but Syria’s antiquities chief said that other ancient landmarks were still standing.

The sick terror group had even used Palmyra’s ancient amphitheatre as a venue for public executions, including the beheading of the city’s 82-year-old former antiquities chief.
