Death by Instagram: Iraqi troops ask for vote on ISIS captive’s fate
An Instagram account claiming to be that of an Iraqi Special Operation Force is allowing its followers to play judge and jury for Islamic State group militants that the account claims it forces have captured, the Guardian reports.
Under the Instagram handle @iraqiswat, the alleged Iraqi forces posted a photograph on Monday of an ISIS terrorist that had been captured south of Mosul.
In the caption of the photo, the account’s 84,000 followers were invited to vote whether the ISIS terrorist should be killed or set free. Followers were instructed to tag their friends as well to join the vote.
“You can vote For (kill him or let him go) You have one hour to vote We will post his fate after one hour Tag your friends and take your right take your revenge from ISIS right now. Please we dont have the time just one hour so tag your friends,” the caption says.
A second image posted later showed the result of the “vote” led to the terrorist’s death.
A senior legal officer for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Gideon Boas, told the Guardian that
