A Syrian refugee has spoken of the horrific moment when he was forced to chose between his young son or his pregnant wife as their boat capsized off the Libyan coast last year.
Ashraf said he can still hear his wife’s desperate screams as she begged him to save her from drowning, describing the agony as he made himself ignore her in order to try to rescue their son from the waves of the Mediterranean.
Despite his efforts, Ashraf’s pregnant wife and sons Karim, five, and Youssef, two, were among the 200 who died in the sinking off the coast of Zuwara, Libya on August 27 last year.
‘I can still hear my wife’s screams. I can still feel my son between my arms – I live that moment every day and will not forget it until they put me under the soil, Ashraf told The Times.
Ashraf, who also lost his mother and one-year-old nephew Mohamed in the sinking said they had paid a human trafficker £500 each for a seat on the boat.
Zuwara, Libya’s most western town located near the Tunisian border, is a major launchpad for smugglers shipping migrants to Italy.
