Scientists say black holes MORE common than thought after finding MONSTER void in space

A SUPERMASSIVE black hole weighing the same as 17 BILLION suns has been found lurking in a sparsely populated area of the universe.

The gargantuan black hole has stunned the scientific community after being confirmed as one of the biggest EVER recorded.

Until now, the biggest supermassive black holes – which were about 10 billion times the sun’s mass – had been found at the cores of large galaxies in regions of the universe packed with other large galaxies.

The record tips the scale at 21 billion suns in the crowded Coma galaxy of Cluster, which has more than 1,000 galaxies in it.

But the discovery of this new supermassive black hole, which is 200 million light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Eridanus, could indicate they are more common than previously thought.

Lead discoverer, Chung-Pei Ma, a University of California-Berkely astronomer and head of the MASSIVE galaxies and supermassive black holes survey, said: “The newly discovered super sized black hole resides in the centre of a massive elliptical galaxy, NGC 1600, located in a cosmic backwater, a small grouping of 20 or so galaxies.”

She added: “There are quite a few galaxies
