ISIS massacres 175 cement factory workers days after taking 300 hostage

ISLAMIC State militants have murdered more than half of the 300 hostages taken hostage at a cement factory outside the Syrian capital earlier this week.

Syrian military sources confirmed the deaths of workers and contractors for Al Badia Cement company, who were taken from near the town of Dumeir, northeast of Damascu.

The fate of the remaining hostages is not known.

Fierce fighting broke out around Dumeir, 30 miles northeast of the capital, late on Tuesday night after ISIS militants launched attacks on government areas northeast of the capital.

But after the extremist death cult – also known as Daesh – failed to capture the town, they took hundreds of local workers hostage.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which monitors the five-year-old conflict, said on Wednesday contact had been lost with staff at the cement works but it was not known what had happened to them.

SOHR, which records violence across the war-ravaged country, said 140 workers at the plant managed to flee before the militants arrived.

Opposition sources in the rural eastern suburbs of Damascus said ISIS militants in Dumeir fired at civilians protesting against their presence in the town and at the abductions.
