Liberals contemplate using the military to bring thousands of additional Syrian refugees to Canada
Talks are underway between the Liberal government and the military to ascertain whether the latter may be able to assist the government to resettle thousands of privately sponsored Syrian refugees in Canada, reported The Canadian Press.
Since November 4, 2015, 26,859 Syrian refugees were airlifted to Canada on 99 government-chartered planes mainly from Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon, of which 15,244 were government sponsored, 9,308 were privately sponsored and the remaining 2,307 were blended visa-office referred refugees.
The formal refugee program, pitched by the government as a “national project” ended in February after 25,000 Syrians were resettled. However, thousands of privately-sponsored refugees are now stuck in limbo because visa officers were pulled back after the government reached its settlement targets and caps were imposed on private sponsorship.
Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship John McCallum confirmed that he is deploying staff overseas, including existing and retired employees
