LEFT REMAINS SILENT: Organization of 51 Muslim States Blocks Gays from UN AIDS Meeting
Organization of Islamic Cooperation turns out to be very uncooperative when it comes to interacting with gays and transgenders, according to Reuters.
Egypt wrote to the president of the United Nations’ 193-member General Assembly on behalf of the OIC – which, at 51 states, is the world’s largest Muslim entity – to object to the attendance of 11 gay and transgender groups at a high-level meeting there next month on ending AIDS.
The letter did not state a reason for the objection. We’re guessing it has something to do with the “Islamic” part of “Organization of Islamic Cooperation.”
So did Samantha Power, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, who wrote to General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft to say that the groups appeared to have been blocked for their involvement in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy.
This prompted a protest on the part of the United States the European Union, and Canada, which are not yet Islamic states. Power’s letter states,
