Norway pulls financial support for Norway’s largest Islamic organization
After a meeting Thursday, with Kebba Seck who are the new, temporary chairman of the Islamic Council of Norway (IRN), the Minister of Culture, Linda Hofstad Helleland, remains concerned about the situation in the organization. She is also not sure that the new board has her confidence, it depends on information about if the new board was elected in a lawful manner.
Until the Ministry receives this report, the biannual financial support will be withdrawn, reports Aftenposten.
About two weeks ago the Board of IRN withdrew in protest because the Council would not go along with the dismissal of General Secretary, Mehtab Afsar.
Kebba Seck, who has been the chairman of IRN previously – from 1998 to 2000 – was brought in to lead a temporary board until the annual meeting in 2017.
In 2000, Seck withdrew from his position as a result of statements he made in a TV2 documentary about FGM. The statements were interpreted as support of female genital mutilation. He has since stated that he was
