The cleanup is underway in Turkey after an attempted coup was knocked down in the early hours of Saturday.

After hours of chaos and without anyone knowing where President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was, he came back to Istanbul and took control.

According to the latest figures 194 people were killed and 1,154 others wounded in connection with the attempted coup, which parts of the Turkish military launched Friday night. Among those killed were 41 police officers and 47 civilians.

Across the country arrests of coup-soldiers have started.

In Ankara nearly 200 soldiers in the army headquarters lay down their arms Saturday morning and surrendered to forces loyal to the government.

Acting army chief General Umit Dundar said that it was primarily the Air Force who were involved in the attempted coup, along with military police and some armored units.

General Chief of Staff, Hulusi Akar, now takes over the operation against the coup makers, after he was rescued from a military base outside the capital, where he was taken hostage.

Over 1,500 officers have been arrested after the attempted coup.

A Turkish military helicopter landed in northern Greece, and eight people on board have sought asylum.
