Firefighter killed as Emirates plane CRASH LANDS and bursts into flames at Dubai Airport
A FIREFIGHTER has been killed tackling a blaze after a plane with 300 people on board crash landed on the runway and burst into flames at Dubai International Airport.
Jasim Issa Mohammed Hassan from Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates is understood to be the only fatality from the incident.
The Government of Dubai’s media office said the brave firefighter died on the plane “while saving the lives of others”.
Emirates chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said authorities were still investigating the incident in which 14 other people were admitted to hospitals with mainly minor injuries.
He said the crash-landing was not caused by any security breach.
Sheikh Ahmed told a press conference the plane entered service in 2003 and underwent maintenance in 2015 and that the United Arab Emirates pilot had over 7,000 hours of flying experience
He added: “Emirates always follows international standards and is strict in implementing safety and maintenance rules.”
Thick black smoke could be seen billowing across the runway at around 10.25am on Wednesday when the plane, with 24 British passengers on board, crashed.
The blaze, on board an Emirates Airline Boeing 777 plane, was tackled by emergency services.
