ISIS Church terror: Suicide bomber stabs Catholic priest and tries to blow up congregation
Eyewitnesses said the knifeman sat with the congregation before running towards the priest with a knife, stabbing him in the arm.
The knifeman was carrying a homemade bomb in his backpack.
Worshippers said they heard an explosion that sounded like fireworks during the attack in the city of Medan on the western island of Sumatra.
Local media say the attacker, an 18-year-old man, was armed with an axe when he went on the rampage.
Chief detective Nur Fallah said: “Somebody tried to kill the priest by pretending to attend the church service and at that time tried to explode something, like a firecracker, but the firecracker didn’t explode, it only fumed.”
Police are treating the stabbing as an act of terrorism.
The terror group has not claimed responsibility for the failed bombing.
A man covered in blood was seen being taken away from the scene by plain-clothed policemen.
Video footage shows the man sitting in his pants with his hands behind his back, his face covered in blood.
Rina Sari Ginting, a spokeswoman for Medan Police said: “A terrorism act was carried out on Sunday morning at the Saint Joseph catholic church.
“Police are interrogating the perpetrator and will search his house for any bomb-making materials.”
