Judge Rules Muslim Who Beheaded Co-Worker Not Competent
A Muslim man has stated he wants to plead guilty and accept the death penalty for beheading a woman he worked with in Oklahoma – but a judge has ruled the man is “not competent” to enter the guilty plea.
In September 2014, Alton Nolen, also known as Jah’Keem Yisrael, attacked and beheaded his co-worker, Colleen Hufford, at Vaughan Foods in Moore, Oklahoma. He also attacked two other co-workers, but they escaped him.
From the beginning, Nolen has admitted guilt and requested the death penalty. He has already undergone “competency testing” from psychologists provided by both the state and the defense team – but the two sides can’t agree, so now the judge is sending him to a mental hospital in Vinita, Oklahoma for further evaluation.
After all, “a man’s life does hang in the balance,” says District Attorney Greg Mashburn.
Colleen Hufford’s daughter, Kelli Hufford, called the judge’s decision inexcusable.
Nolen had converted to Islam, had researched ISIS and beheadings on his computer, and had an ISIS flag in his car, prosecutors stated during an earlier hearing Friday, August 12.
When asked at the hearing if he was sticking with his guilty plea, Nolen responded, “Praise to Allah, yes.” When asked if he wanted more time to consider, he answered, “Praise to Allah, no.”
That’s just not sane thinking, says the defense team. “He has lost touch with reality… it has gone to that extreme,” said Texas neuropsychologist Antionette McGarrahan to the judge. “He can’t think rationally because he firmly believes he is being held captive, and we are all evil and the devil.”
Instead, McGarrahan claimed Nolen is “severely mentally ill with a thought disorder, grandiose in his thinking and paranoid.”
In reality, Nolen is being “held captive”… he has been imprisoned since he beheaded his co-worker.
Even though Nolen justified his actions based on the Quaran, the defense claims the Quran doesn’t teach that, so again, he must not be rational.
More from NewsOK:
Prosecutors have told the judge in legal papers that Nolen after his arrest “justified his actions based on his reading of the Quran and stated that he would do the same thing again to anyone who oppressed him.”
The revelation about the ISIS flag came during the testimony of defense expert Robert Hunt, a professor at Southern Methodist University and an expert on Islamic beliefs.
Hunt testified that Nolen had developed ideas about being a Muslim that are irrational and contradictory. He said they are not in keeping with normal Islamic teachings or even the extreme ideology of ISIS.
“The use of beheading by ISIS is in the context of perceived crimes against the Muslim community and involves trials, however unjust, and a finding of guilt,” Hunt wrote in a report to the judge. “They do not involve settling personal disputes.”
